Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Offers Enhanced Performance But Similar Power Consumption to Its Predecessor

by September 2, 2025

Qualcomm’s Upcoming Chipset

Qualcomm is gearing up to unveil its latest flagship system on chip (SoC), the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, later this month. Although the company will not reveal its first 2nm chipset for another year, this new version promises to enhance performance while maintaining energy efficiency levels similar to those of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Performance Insights

According to a rumor from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will showcase significant performance enhancements. However, there is a downside; the rumored power consumption will be comparable to that of the current Snapdragon 8 Elite. This situation may stem from the use of TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, also known as ‘N3P’.

This manufacturing technology offers only a slight improvement of about 5 percent in performance without altering the power consumption. Alternatively, users could experience a battery life improvement ranging from 5 to 10 percent at the same clock speeds. Consequently, the transition to 2nm technology with Qualcomm’s 2026 flagship is anticipated to yield more pronounced benefits.

Manufacturing Considerations

While this transition represents a mere lithography upgrade, Qualcomm is expected to maximize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s capabilities. Remarkably, an underclocked version tested on the Galaxy S26 Edge, with performance cores running at 4.00GHz instead of 4.74GHz, surpassed the Snapdragon 8 Elite in both single-core and multi-core performance tests.

Future Expectations

Thanks to advancements in silicon-carbon battery technology, Qualcomm’s partners in China may equip their devices with larger battery cells. This could enable smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to perform optimally while still ensuring extended usage times. Any further revelations about the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will be shared with readers in due course.
