AirTag Aids Man in Recovering Stolen Luggage from LAX

Innovative Tracking Solution

AirTags, the small GPS devices introduced by Apple in 2021, have proven their versatility beyond just locating misplaced keys. A recent incident highlights their capability to assist in retrieving stolen luggage.

Incident at LAX

Daniel Scott, while returning to Los Angeles from Salt Lake City in August, discovered that his suitcase had been stolen from the baggage claim area. According to NBC Los Angeles, after searching several carousels at the airport without success, he turned to the AirTag hidden inside his suitcase for assistance.

Using the AirTag

Upon checking his phone, Scott noticed that the AirTag indicated his luggage was moving away from the airport. He quickly rushed to the rideshare lot and booked an Uber to follow its signal. Meanwhile, his partner contacted the LAX police, who helped trace the AirTag to an abandoned building nearby.

Police Action and Recovery

When police arrived at the location, they found several individuals inside the building. Scott identified one person wearing his clothing. Law enforcement proceeded to detain multiple suspects, and Scott was able to recover most of his clothes, although his suitcase was left in ruins.

Encouragement for Travelers

Reflecting on the experience, Scott recommended that fellow travelers consider using AirTags. He stated, “It just gave me a fighting chance to find my luggage and retrieve it.”

The Broader Impact of AirTags

Initially designed as compact GPS trackers to help people keep track of their belongings, AirTags have found applications in various situations involving theft recovery. Notably, a couple in London successfully tracked down their stolen Jaguar using an AirTag, and another individual strategically placed AirTags in stolen power tools to facilitate their retrieval.

The Dark Side

However, the rise in popularity of AirTags has also resulted in their misuse for stalking, as they can be easily hidden in personal items. In response, Apple has collaborated with Google and other Bluetooth tracker manufacturers to send notifications to users if an unknown AirTag is detected alongside them.

Airlines Adapting to Technology

In light of the growing number of travelers utilizing AirTags, many airlines have adapted their customer service protocols. More than a dozen airlines have begun allowing passengers to submit AirTag data to enhance the tracking of lost luggage, aiming to expedite the reunion of bags with their rightful owners.
