A New York City influencer was left bewildered after noticing that her beautician wore Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses during a Brazilian wax appointment. Aniessa Navarro, who boasts over 100,000 followers on TikTok, recently recounted this unsettling encounter, expressing her disbelief at the situation.
The incident took place at a European Wax Center in New York, although Navarro chose not to disclose the specific location. “I’ve been going to European Wax Center for years, I’m not even kidding, maybe eight years at this point, maybe nine years at this point,” she stated in her video.
The Unexpected Discovery
Despite her long-standing history with the establishment, this visit felt distinctly different. Navarro explained, “The girl that was giving me the wax… she was wearing Meta glasses, and I didn’t notice it at first, because we were talking so much, we had good banter, she was very nice.” It wasn’t until about five minutes into the service that Navarro realized something was off. “I’m like looking at her, and I’m looking at her glasses, and then I’m like, ‘Are you wearing Meta glasses?'” she recalled.
The beautician confirmed, “Oh, yeah, I am, but they’re not charged, they’re not on, like, I promise.'” However, the reassurance did little to ease Navarro’s concern. “I could not stop thinking, like, ‘Could this girl be recording me?'” she remembered. “I literally could not stop thinking about it the whole entire time, and then I walked out and I left.”
Concerns About Privacy
Navarro shared that the incident has since occupied her mind significantly. She speculated, “What if she has that video and what if there’s been multiple videos she’s taken of waxing people, and that could go into a whole other thing of where those videos could be, but I just don’t know what I should do.”
She also mentioned that the beautician had indicated that the glasses were prescription but advised that another pair of glasses should be used for work. Following the incident, Navarro reached out to the European Wax Center via email and described the reply as a “generic” response.
The Company’s Response
In a statement to The Washington Post, a representative for European Wax Center asserted that the waxer’s glasses were “powered off at the time of service.”
Navarro revealed she consulted two law firms regarding her experience, although she expressed that her goal wasn’t to get anyone fired or to ruin anyone’s life. “I hope in regard to me speaking out about this is that these glasses get banned from a room like that,” she declared.
Public Reactions
In response to Navarro’s follow-up video, many viewers echoed her concerns. Comments included critiques about the appropriateness of wearing such technology in private settings. One user remarked, “If she can afford prescription Meta glasses, she can afford one pair of cheap regular prescription glasses for her job.” Another commented, “Cameras can get hacked. Ring cameras have gotten hacked in the past. Even if the camera wasn’t turned on by the user, it can get turned on if hacked. Personally, I don’t think any cameras or recording devices should be allowed in areas like that.” A third TikTok user added, “She shouldn’t wear glasses with a recording device on them while in a private setting regardless.”
