Venus Williams Makes Quarterfinals in U.S. Open Doubles
Venus Williams has successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open. Teaming up with unseeded partner Leylah Fernandez, the duo triumphed over the 12th-seeded pair of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Shuai Zhang with a score of 6-3, 6-4 during the Round of 16 on Monday.
Williams, a seasoned competitor with 14 Grand Slam doubles titles to her name, is on a quest to secure her first title at this prestigious event without her sister, Serena, as her partner.
Match Highlights
After taking the initial set, Williams and Fernandez found themselves tied at 3 in the second set against Alexandrova and Zhang. A crucial break allowed them to regain the lead, and they successfully held serve during the next two opportunities to clinch the match.
At match point, leading 40-15, Williams delivered a powerful serve toward the corner. Following the return, Fernandez, positioned at the net, executed a well-placed slice shot between her opponents to finalize the victory.
Looking Ahead
In the next round, Williams and Fernandez will meet the winners of the match between Taylor Townsend and Kateřina Siniaková, the tournament’s top seed, against Camila Osorio and Yuan Yue.
This marks Williams’ first appearance in a Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal since Wimbledon in 2016.
After the match, Williams shared a message for her sister, encouraging Serena to come to Queens for their upcoming matches. “Really, she’s so happy for Leylah and I, and she’s giving us advice,” Williams stated during her on-court interview. “We just need her in the box. So my message is: Serena, you need to show up.”
