Winners
Baker Mayfield has emerged as a standout player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Pro Bowler, who has achieved this honor in each of the last two seasons, is rejuvenating his career in Tampa. As the 2025 season approaches, he faces the challenge of adjusting to a new offensive coordinator once more. Compounding his difficulties, he will begin the season without the support of key players such as star left tackle Tristan Wirfs and wide receiver Chris Godwin.
In a positive development, both Wirfs and Godwin have been activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, securing their spots on the 53-player roster to start the season. If either had remained on the PUP list, they would have been sidelined for at least four games, which would have added to Mayfield’s hurdles.
While Mayfield may lack the services of Godwin and Wirfs in the opening week, there is a possibility that both players could return within the first month of the season.
Losers
On the downside, quarterback Kyle Trask has seen his prospects dim considerably. Just a few offseasons ago, Trask was in a competitive battle with Mayfield for the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback position. However, after Mayfield secured the starting role, Trask has spent the last two seasons preparing for a moment that may never come if Mayfield remains healthy and effective.
