Medvedev’s Coaching Change
Daniil Medvedev has ended his partnership with longtime coach Gilles Cervara following a lackluster year in Grand Slam tournaments, culminating in a first-round exit at the US Open.
The 2021 US Open champion and his coach both took to Instagram on Sunday to express gratitude for their successful collaboration, which saw Medvedev rise to the top of the ATP rankings.
“I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future,”
Medvedev wrote, reflecting on their “amazing 8-10 years together,” alongside a photo of them with their U.S. Open trophies.
Recent Struggles
Despite securing 20 titles throughout his career, Medvedev’s current ATP ranking has slipped to No. 13. He has been eliminated in the first round of his last three major tournaments, including two losses to Benjamin Bonzi.
During the recent setback against Bonzi, Medvedev vented his frustration after a delay prompted by a photographer entering the court. He received a $42,500 fine from the U.S. Open for unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse.
Cervara’s Reflection
Cervara expressed his affection for coaching Medvedev, stating,
“I loved coaching and supporting you (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform.”
He continued to emphasize Medvedev’s unique style, remarking,
“I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.”
