Labor Day 2025: What to Expect for Open and Closed Services

by September 2, 2025

Labor Day Overview

Labor Day, celebrated on September 1 this year, marks a federal holiday that honors the American labor movement and the contributions of millions of workers to the U.S. economy. As many Americans conclude their summer vacations and students prepare for the academic year, this long weekend often serves as a final celebration of the warm season.

On this day, government offices and banks will be closed, but a variety of retail stores will remain open, offering shoppers the chance to take advantage of Labor Day deals.

Retail and Grocers

For those planning to shop for groceries, it’s important to note that Costco warehouses will be closed. Aldi stores will operate with limited hours that can vary by location. Most Whole Foods locations will be open, but customers are advised to confirm their local store hours.

In contrast, Trader Joe’s and Kroger-owned establishments—including Kroger, Pick ‘n Save, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, and Ralphs—will adhere to their standard operating hours. Major retailers such as Walmart and Target will also be operating as usual, and Home Depot will welcome shoppers interested in home improvement deals.

Walgreens stores will maintain regular hours, but many of their pharmacies will be closed, with some exceptions for 24-hour locations. Conversely, CVS stores and pharmacies will be open, though operating hours may vary.

Postal Services

The United States Postal Service (USPS), functioning as an independent federal agency, will suspend its regular operations for the holiday, meaning no mail will be collected or delivered. UPS will also not conduct pickups or deliveries, and some locations may be closed, while UPS Express Critical services will operate as scheduled.

FedEx will see most of its services closed for the day, although FedEx Office, which provides printing services, will have adjusted hours, and FedEx Custom Critical will remain operational.

Banks

Most banks will recognize the federal banking holiday and will be closed, but online banking and ATM services will still be accessible. Additionally, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will not operate on Labor Day.

Government Offices

State and local courts, along with administrative offices, will close for the holiday. Federal offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and public libraries, will also be unavailable.

As Americans prepare for the unofficial end of summer, it’s essential to plan around these service closures.
