The New Orleans Saints have officially appointed Spencer Rattler as their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, concluding a quarterback competition that raised eyebrows after last season’s performance.
Rattler, a fifth-round pick in 2024, outperformed Tyler Shough, the team’s second-round selection who was expected to take the reins following the retirement of Derek Carr. Reports of Rattler’s inconsistency last year, where he ranked among the league’s lowest in several metrics, have stirred concerns within the organization.
In a curious timing, the announcement came shortly after news broke of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement, suggesting that the Saints may have wanted to downplay this disappointing outcome. Coach Kellen Moore expressed confidence in Rattler’s potential, stating, “He’s done an awesome job this offseason. He’s made some really good decisions throughout this whole entire process. And you know, his ability to make plays with his arm and his feet have certainly shown up. I’m really excited about Spencer. He’s earned this opportunity. He’s going to do a tremendous job for us.”
Moore remains optimistic about Shough’s development, stating, “I’m a big believer in just the importance of developing quarterbacks, developing them the right way,” and mentioned plans to include him in the team’s scout team.
Despite the high hopes pinned on Shough when he was selected with the 40th overall pick, his inability to secure the starting role is surprising. He brought extensive experience from multiple college programs and was considered pro-ready. In contrast, Rattler’s performance last season was less than stellar, completing just 57 percent of his passes for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions across seven appearances. He faced considerable struggles, ranking 39th in EPA per play and completion percentage over expectation among quarterbacks who registered at least 250 plays.
The 2024 season proved challenging for the Saints overall, as they struggled with dramatic inconsistencies and an unfortunate injury record among key players. Following a promising start, the team’s momentum crumbled, leading to the dismissal of head coach Dennis Allen midseason.
Entering the new season, the Saints sought to revamp their strategies and hired Kellen Moore, who had just orchestrated a Super Bowl victory as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. With a fresh coaching staff and a focus on restructuring its financial commitments, the organization aimed for a revival. However, after selecting offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. with their first draft pick, it appeared New Orleans might opt for a longer rebuild instead of seeking immediate returns at the quarterback position by drafting Shough.
Analyzing the outlook for the Saints this season, sportsbooks reflect a grim forecast, with their win total set at 4.5, and a rating of -1600 for missing playoff contention—the second lowest in the league.
Given the team’s trajectory and the history of fifth-round quarterbacks, Rattler faces an uphill battle to defy expectations. Historically, fewer players drafted in this range have succeeded, with notable examples being rare. If he can develop into a reliable starting player, similar to journeymen like Matt Cassel or Gus Frerotte, it would be seen as a significant win. However, the Saints are likely anticipating more than just average performance from their new starter.
