Devastating Landslide in Darfur
In a catastrophic event, a landslide in the Marra Mountains region of western Sudan has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 individuals, according to a report from the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army. The group stated that only one person survived this tragedy.
The tragic landslide occurred on August 31, following several days of heavy rainfall, as detailed in a statement by the movement’s leader, Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour.
Appeal for International Assistance
As control of the area lies with the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, the organization is urgently requesting that the United Nations and international humanitarian agencies provide assistance in recovering the remains of the deceased, which include men, women, and children.
The movement noted that the village has been “completely leveled to the ground.”
Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The region is also grappling with a humanitarian crisis as residents, fleeing the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur, sought refuge in the Marra Mountains. Unfortunately, they now face a scarcity of food and medical supplies.
This two-year civil war has resulted in over half of the population experiencing crisis-level hunger and has displaced millions, with the capital of North Darfur, Al-Fashir, currently under attack.
This report is still developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
