Introduction of Dolby Vision 2
After a decade-long wait, Dolby has announced the next evolution of its revolutionary Dolby Vision technology, introducing Dolby Vision 2 at IFA 2025. This sequel promises a host of new features to enhance the company’s proprietary HDR format.
Key Features of Dolby Vision 2
Content Intelligence
At the heart of Dolby Vision 2 is a new engine that supports innovative tools, including “Content Intelligence.” This feature, which relies on artificial intelligence, adapts the picture quality of your TV based on what you are watching and your viewing environment. It includes:
- Precision Blacks: This tool dynamically adjusts the quality of dark scenes, which could benefit OLED panel users who have previously struggled with dark content performance.
- Light-Sensing Technology: This feature monitors ambient light in the viewer’s surroundings and automatically optimizes the TV settings to match the room’s lighting conditions.
- Enhanced Motion Control: Improvements have been made to how Dolby Vision handles fast-paced content like gaming and live sports, adjusting motion control and white point for better color temperature in white hues.
Two Tiers of Dolby Vision 2
Dolby is launching two versions of this new technology: Dolby Vision 2 and Dolby Vision 2 Max. The latter is aimed at high-performance TVs and boasts more premium features. According to a representative from Dolby:
“Dolby Vision 2 Max includes capabilities designed to unlock the full capabilities and best picture quality on the highest-performing TVs. This includes capabilities such as bi-directional tone mapping, Authentic Motion, and more advanced tools tailored for enthusiasts.”
This suggests that Dolby Vision 2 Max will exploit the superior quality of high-end televisions, while Dolby Vision 2 targets the more mainstream market.
Availability and Future Prospects
Dolby plans to focus initially on the mainstream segment, starting the rollout of Dolby Vision 2 on Hisense TVs. Specific timings and availability have yet to be announced, but these will be equipped with the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chipset.
Since the original Dolby Vision was launched, technology has progressed significantly, notably in the realm of AI and contextual understanding. The introduction of Dolby Vision 2 aims to optimize both current and future TV generations, reflecting the substantial advancements made since 2014. As always, the true impact of these enhancements will be assessed once audiences can experience Dolby Vision 2 in action.
